About panic disorder
Panic attacks are intense, sudden surges of fear or physical alarm — a racing heart, shortness of breath, chest tightness, lightheadedness, a sense of unreality. They can happen out of the blue, and the fear of having another one can become its own disorder. Many people land in the ER for their first attack convinced they are having a heart event. Our psychiatric providers evaluate panic against the broader anxiety picture, discuss medication management when clinically appropriate, and emphasize evidence-based therapy approaches that target the cycle of panic.
Common signs of panic attacks
- Sudden, intense surges of fear with physical symptoms — racing heart, chest tightness, shortness of breath
- Lightheadedness, tingling, or a feeling of unreality during attacks
- Persistent worry about having another attack
- Avoiding places where past attacks happened (cars, stores, meetings)
- Repeated emergency room or urgent care visits with normal cardiac workup
- Sleep disruption from nighttime attacks
- A constricted life — driving routes, social plans, or travel limited by anticipatory fear
This list is a starting point for conversation, not a diagnostic tool. A clinical evaluation looks at the full picture.

Our approach to panic attacks
Evaluation
We assess attack frequency, triggers (or lack of them), avoidance behaviors, and any medical workup you have already had. When clinically appropriate, we discuss a treatment plan that may include first-line medication, breathing and grounding skills, and referral to evidence-based therapy.
Medication management
First-line medications for panic disorder are SSRIs and SNRIs, taken daily, which reduce the frequency and intensity of attacks over weeks. Benzodiazepines are controlled substances and are generally avoided as a long-term solution because of dependence risk; if discussed at all, it is for narrow, short-term situations. No prescription is promised before evaluation.
Therapy as a complement
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with interoceptive exposure has very strong evidence for panic disorder — it directly targets the fear-of-fear cycle. We refer to therapists trained in this approach.

Panic Disorder in Utah — questions we hear
Often, yes. The physical sensations of a panic attack closely mimic cardiac symptoms. Once a serious medical cause has been ruled out, an evaluation can clarify whether panic is the underlying picture.
