About insomnia

Chronic insomnia is difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking unrefreshed most nights for three months or more — and the consequences (mood, focus, immune function, accident risk) ripple through everything else. Our psychiatric providers evaluate insomnia in the context of broader mental health, screen for conditions like sleep apnea that need a different workup, and discuss treatment options. We strongly favor non-pharmacologic approaches as the foundation and reserve sleep medications for specific, time-limited use.

Common signs of insomnia

  • Difficulty falling asleep most nights, even when exhausted
  • Waking repeatedly during the night and struggling to return to sleep
  • Early-morning waking with inability to get back to sleep
  • Feeling unrefreshed despite a full night in bed
  • Daytime fatigue, brain fog, or mood changes from poor sleep
  • Anxiety about sleep itself — dreading bedtime
  • Reliance on alcohol, cannabis, or over-the-counter aids to fall asleep

This list is a starting point for conversation, not a diagnostic tool. A clinical evaluation looks at the full picture.

Our approach to insomnia

Evaluation

We assess sleep history, current sleep habits, any underlying mood or anxiety conditions, medical contributors, and substance use that affects sleep. We screen for sleep apnea and refer for a sleep study when indicated.

Medication management

CBT-I (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia) is the first-line treatment per evidence and current guidelines. When sleep medication is discussed, we generally avoid benzodiazepines and "Z-drugs" for chronic use because of dependence and next-day effects. No specific prescription is promised before evaluation.

Therapy as a complement

CBT-I has stronger evidence than any sleep medication for chronic insomnia. We refer to CBT-I trained therapists in Utah and to digital CBT-I programs when access is limited.

OUR APPROACH

Care that puts you first

We believe in relationship-based care, thoughtful treatment, and personalized plans that prioritize your long-term wellbeing over quick fixes.

Safe, Evidence-Based Prescribing

Your safety is our priority. We follow rigorous, research-backed guidelines to ensure every treatment decision is grounded in evidence and tailored to your needs.

First-line, well-researched medications — We rely on medication options supported by extensive clinical research and proven long-term outcomes.

Safe, non–habit-forming prescribing — We avoid habit-forming medications and prioritize treatments with minimal long-term risks.

Medication only when truly needed — We aim for the smallest medication burden possible while still achieving results. Every prescription has a clear clinical rationale.

We Take Time With Our Patients

Our appointments are intentionally longer than industry norms because thoughtful psychiatric care requires depth, collaboration, and trust.

60 MINUTESInitial Evaluation

A comprehensive deep-dive into your psychiatric history, current symptoms, medical history, past treatments, trauma history, lifestyle factors, sleep, nutrition, substance use, family history, and personal goals. You are never rushed.

30 MINUTESFollow-Up Visits

More than just "adjust meds and move on." Each visit is a therapeutic conversation where we explore medication effectiveness, side effects, emotional wellbeing, coping strategies, and lifestyle modifications that elevate your quality of life.

Insomnia in Utah questions we hear

CBT-I produces better long-term results than any sleep medication for chronic insomnia and avoids the rebound, tolerance, and next-day effects of sleep aids. Medication may have a role short-term or alongside CBT-I.
